I'm not an artist, I'm a coder. More often than not, the graphics in my games are made up of (procedurally generated) single colour shapes. But every once in a while a game gets so far down the road I feel I want to add "real" graphics to it in order to make it feel complete. It rarely happens since I never find any, and on the occasions when I try to make my own I spend two or three minutes on them tops, so there is hardly any improvement.

I'm looking for a sort of sprite database with a little of everything. There are a few online, like this and this, but those focus mainly on ripped sprites. Which (I guess) I'm not allowed to redistribute in those oh-so-rare cases where I actually want to show my game to anyone.

About a year ago there was a thread here I followed with great interest. Sadly, it seemed to have died. That would have been a perfect thing.

Then there are the look-ive-made-some-stuff-and-want-to-see-it-in-a-game threads. Where there usually are some nice sprites with just a PM away.

And in a more concise way:
  • Am I (legally) allowed to redistribute ripped sprites?
  • Is there any such site that works like the one described here?
  • Or is my best bet just scanning tigsource forum?

I don't have a real answer to your questions, but have you thought about collaborating with someone? I'm in a vice versa situation (artist looking for a programmer) and I've found that collaborating with someone seems to be the easiest, most legit way to go.

Anyway, that's just my two cents, hope you get some answers.
